Chapter 12

When Iris and I got to the farmhouse, Grady had changed his mind.

“Mom, can you please go with us?” I’d only seen this look once before on Grady’s face. It was when I told him that his father had died. “Aunt Iris, can you stay with Clara?”

The look was a mix of fear, uncertainty, and sadness.

“Of course.” Iris was so good at taking charge. She grabbed Clara out of his arms. “Go. Go. We will be fine.”

Clara bounced with joy. She loved Iris. Iris was the fun one who let her do whatever it was she wanted. It gave me and Grady great comfort knowing Clara was left in good hands.

Grady went to pull the car up to the front porch while I got Julia’s bag and her prepared to leave.

“Okay. Let’s get you in the car.” I took Julia by the hand and helped her up, the bag on my shoulder.

Both of us looked down and noticed the blood trickling down her legs.

“Bernie.” She silently started to cry.

“It’s okay. Let’s get you to the hospital.” I nodded and fought back the tears, knowing this wasn’t a good sign but hoping for the best. I grabbed the blanket on the couch to take with us.

Iris had noticed, too, and she immediately took Clara outside to play on the tree swing so we could just go and not have to worry with them.

Julia took deliberate steps, and Grady met us at the door.

He saw the blood. His eye drew up Julia’s body, and instantly he picked her up and cradled her into himself before he swiftly carried her to the car.

“You get in back with Julia, and I’ll drive,” I told him and laid the blanket along the back seat next to Clara’s car seat.

While he got her in, I ran around, took out Clara’s car seat, and set it on the ground, knowing Iris would grab it for us.

Julia whimpered the entire way to the hospital while Grady whispered sweet nothings in her ear, cuddling her close to him.

The nurses were waiting for us when we pulled up to the emergency room and whisked Julia off before I could even say goodbye.

Grady darted along with them.

I went to park the car.

“Richard, if you can hear me,” I said out loud. “The one thing you can do for me to rectify what you’ve done to our family is to be with your son right now. He needs the comfort of his father. Trust me when I say that Mac runs circles around your sorry—” I started to feel really angry and frustrated. Not with how Richard had done me and our marriage wrong, but how he hadn’t even taken Grady into consideration in his actions. Any of them. If Richard hadn’t had that second life, he would’ve never gotten in the car to go see them and ended up dead. He would be right here by our side, comforting his son through this difficult time.

I was not saying I wasn’t a great mother.
